Preparing for an Advising Session

New Students - Have Your Placement Information

If you have not already done so, submit any of the following documents to Records and Registration at least one week prior to meeting with an advisor. Ask that they be added to your record, and bring a copy with you to your appointment:

  • A copy of your high school transcript if you graduated within the past five years
  • Transcripts (official or unofficial) from all colleges you previously attended
  • Score reports, such as SAT, ACT, AP, IB and CLEP

If you've taken placement tests at AACC the advisor will be able to access your scores.

Returning Students - Evaluate Your Program Progress

  1. Log on to MyAACC.
  2. Select the Self Services from the Menu tab.
  3. Select Student Planning, Scheduling & Registration > My Progress

Come Prepared to Discuss Your Goals

Consider these questions in advance so your advisor can help you research the type of degree or certificate required, help you decide if you will need to transfer to a four-year institution, help you determine which AACC program of study will best prepare you and then which courses you should consider next.

  • What is your long-range career goal?
  • Do you plan to transfer to a four-year institution? If so, which ones are you considering?
  • What is your program of study at AACC? If you're not sure, see the undeclared student information below.
  • Do you intend to be a full-time or part-time student?
  • Do you prefer online or traditional format (face-to-face) classes?

Arrive On Time and Have the Following

  • A photo ID
  • Your AACC ID number
  • Any transcripts or scores from other schools not previously submitted to AACC

Undeclared?

Degree-seeking students must declare their program of study (major) after completing 24 credits. This helps us help you stay on track, and make sure the time you spend in class is maximized in meeting your academic goals. Not sure what to declare? Sometimes trying things and learning what doesn’t interest you is as important as finding things that do.

Tips to Finding your Area of Interest

  • Browse Programs and Courses.
  • Take electives in areas you might be interested in within your first 24 credits.
  • Attend workshops designed to help you decide on a major and career such as "Choosing a Major," "Evaluating Career Options" and "Career and Life Values".
  • Register for "Career Development and Assessment" (PSY-100), a 3-credit course.
  • Learn about the job market and employment trends through the Maryland Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook or this handy guide.
  • Get work experience.
  • Apply for an internship
  • Talk to other students pursuing studies that interest you.
  • Talk to faculty and advisors within your school or department of interest.
  • Talk to friends and neighbors employed in your areas of interest.
